DAY TWO

When I woke up, I was in the nurse’s office. I had known her from before, because she’s the nurse for both the OW and regular sides of the school.  Some call her Nurse Nokutsu, but I usually just call her Miss Suzuki.
“Ross brought you a change of clothes for this morning.  You should thank her.”  I just nodded. In my mind I was going through everything that happened the day before.  I could not help but dwell upon two things.  My history partner and the fact that Pasht couldn’t be human.  He was still alive after being cut in half!  No normal person could survive that!
“Miss Suzuki, you’ve been working with the OW classes for years, right?”  She nodded.  “Then… is it possible for one of the OW students to get cut completely in half and survive?  Because-“ She interrupted me.
“Yes, it is.  For some of them, it is.  For Pasht, it is possible.  You would definitely die.  I’m afraid, though that I cannot tell you what Pasht is.  If he wishes to tell you he will.”  The bell rang signifying the start of classes.  I guess I was skipping breakfast.  I got changed and ran to health.  Today Kairii was much more chipper.  Unfortunately.  She started right in with alcohol abuse lectures.  She’s such a hypocrite.  Apparently the reason she was so iffy the day before was because she was hung-over.  She’s lost all respect in my eyes.  My experience yesterday has really opened my eyes.  I’m beginning to notice all sorts of stuff.  My history partner is here too.  And occasionally I can see something twitching in his hair, and his teeth are vaguely pointy, like Pasht and Melinda’s.  I wonder… if I should be afraid now.  For some reason my body refuses to panic, though.  I walked into a wall on my way to elemental studies in front of him and the most I did was blush out of embarrassment.
“Be more careful next time.”  I didn’t answer him.  “Hmm…  You seem distant…”  Once again I didn’t answer.  He was right, though. It felt like I was on another planet.  When we both walked into Elemental Studies it was complete chaos- a few of the troublemakers had gotten a hold of some duct tape and attached poor little Miss Maelie to a wall!  From behind me I heard a very deep, very loud growling.  Everyone stopped except for Miss Maelie, who kept struggling against her bonds.  My history partner stepped forward, pushing me out of the way, and ripped down all of the duct tape.  Miss Maelie brushed herself off daintily and thanked him.
“As for the rest of you, all of those who caused this ruckus now have the choice of alternative punishments or seven detentions- EACH!”  She glanced across the room. “That is Kuroyuki, Kaze, Chiruho, Morosaki, and Zen.” Then we all heard a small voice coming from the back of the classroom.
“But… Zen is innocent… he was trying to stop them.”  It was Kit, another new student, like me.  I was surprised that she was standing up for Zen, because she had always struck me as a very shy person.
“Alright Zen, you are off the hook. But as for the rest of you, what will it be?”
“I’m taking the alt. punishment. There is no way anybody’s gonna make me serve detentions with a ten-year-old.  You know what?  I’m not gonna degrade myself of accepting any punishment from you.  I’m out of here.”  With that, he left.  Miss Maelie seemed so confused!  She is, after all, such a young teacher… and this is apparently only her second year here.  I don’t think she’s used to such a large and horribly behaved class.
“Umm, Morosaki and I were thinking… that we’ll take the detentions…” Chiruho said, breaking my sympathetic thoughts.
“Well if everyone else’s lame punishments are settled, then I’ll take the alternative punishments.  Just remember that it won’t be my fault when everything backfires.” Kaze said.  She was pretty, not beautiful, but pretty.  As the last few words came out of her mouth, her cat-like green eyes flashed.  Miss Maelie put her hand up in response, hesitated and cursed under her breath.  She quickly put her hand back down.
“I… I can’t.  I’m too afraid…”  She turned herself away from Kaze, whose smile was laden with smugness.  A boy from the back of the classroom stood up and went over to her.
“Maelie, are you okay?” I walked over as well. She shook her head no.  She may be my science teacher, but she is still just a child nonetheless.
“I… I lost face in front of all of those students… now they’ll never respect me… Alex, you know… this is the first time this has ever happened… I’ve never not been able to punish a student… but with Kaze… if I go ahead and try I’ll be the one in pain in the end.”
“Why’s that?”
“Kaze… is unique.  She is a prodigy in the magick arts, but solely in dark magick.  If I use my elemental magick she’ll just reflect it back at me with a shadow knit shield, and then counter with a more powerful spell.”
“So this is magick class?”  She nodded.  “Can’t you report her to the principal?” She shook her head no.
“No, I’m afraid that’s not how it works.” Alex spoke up. “Here the teachers are expected to administer their own punishments, as well as classroom rules.  The Principal makes the major school rules, and decides whether or not if someone who breaks one of those rules gets in trouble. If he does, then they are punished by the Vice principal.
“That’s stupid.  But… if Kaze is so good at magick then why does she have to take this class, Miss Maelie?”
“Kaze is very good, that’s true, but only in dark magick.  She cannot cast any elemental or white magick spells, and astral magick is still way above her level. This class, course catered to what I do best, is mainly elemental magick. Still…” she perked up. “I still have to teach.  So everyone settle down.”  She began to review the basic course, and gave us some more free time at the end. Kaze came over to my history partner, obviously with some poison honey on her lips.  She tried to flirt with him.
“Ryo-ryo kyuuun!”  Her voice was as sweet as sugar, but in her words I could sense an ulterior motive.
“Call me by my name.”  Luckily, He sounded annoyed.
“Whatever.  Still, you know about that dance on Saturday?  Well… I was wondering if you’d come with me!”
“No.”
“What!?! Why not!?!  Humph… I’m sure you’ll change your mind the day before the dance…”
“I don’t think he’ll change his mind by tomorrow.” I chimed in, not realizing what a stupid move this was.
“So it’s because of her you won’t go with me!  This filthy… HUMAN!” Then her face turned into a sickly sweet smile. “I guess that’s okay… after all humans don’t ever live very long.  And once she’s gone, you’ll come running back to me.”  It was a death threat against me… but once again I didn’t panic.
“Should… Should I be afraid?” of course, he was ignoring me.  The look on his face was intense, with his fingers lightly tracing his scar.
“I never run back.”  Then, the bell rang and I followed behind him to Art.  When we both sat down, He began to draw.  It was beautiful!  It was a black dragon wrapping itself around a stone tower with a maiden inside.
“You’re a really good artist…”  He looked up at me, once again with the slightly unexpecting look on his face.
“I’d rather draw someone happy…”  The look on his face just then seemed so sad… so being the completely idiotic person I am, I said just about the most cliché stupid thing in the world.
“But… maybe she’s not sad, maybe the dragon is protecting her, you know?  From all of the bad things in the world, so that the dragon is the good guy, right?  And that would mean that she’s not sad, right?”  He chuckled.  I admit, I sounded SO stupid.  He took out another sheet of paper and began to draw again. When he held out the finished product to me, I blushed.  It was me, playing in the snow. I took it, stammering out thanks.  Here he was, drawing a picture of me, for me, and I don’t even know his name!  just as I was about to ask, the bell rang.  Lunch itself was uneventful, and it came and went.
In Math, we once again immediately were set to work.  I, as per usual, was very confused.
“I heard that we’ll be getting even more new students on Monday.”  My history partner said, but I didn’t pay attention.
“What was that?  Sorry, I was trying to figure out this problem, but I keep on getting really weird answers, like all these stupid fake numbers… let’s see carry this over and divide by this… use the exponent and- EH!?! INFINITY DIVIDED BY FOUR POINT THREE TWO SIX!?!? That can’t be right…” He leaned over my shoulder and pointed to the problem.
“This is where you went wrong.  Here, let me help you.”  I was glad he couldn’t see my face because I was blushing.
“Thanks… heh.  It’s kind of funny… I don’t even know your name… but you’re being so nice to me.  He leaned back, and the back of my head was assaulted by an eraser, then a pen.
“Is that any easier?” It was a perfect explanation, even to my flawed human logic.  It did not though, reveal his name. A couple of small books this time found my head.
“Yeah! That makes perfect senSE!” A large textbook hit my head, forcing my head to go forward.  Ross was trying to get my attention.
“Good.” He turned back to his own work, and Ross continued to try and get my attention from across the classroom, with objects of increasing size and weight.  When our work was done, I tried to press for his name again.  He seemed about to tell me when my head was slammed into my desk by a large and painful brick.
“Yes…Ross?”
“Come over here!”
“I can’t Ross.”
“Why not?”
“The teacher has rules against it.”
“Rules-Shmules! Get over here!” then, Pyxis stepped in.
“What did I hear about rules Ross?  You love the rules I make? Hmm… you also want a detention? Sure!  Ok then, I’ll see you after class.”  Ross groaned, and Pyxis patted her heartily on the back, smiling.  Math ended, and literature began. I worked quickly and read all the books for the year, and completed the required work well into next month. The period ended and we were sent to drama class.
I must admit, He is a very shameless actor. He will play any part you put him in.  He was put as a valli girl and it sounded scarily convincing.  Drama led to my first actual Phys Ed session.
“Let’s begin once again with pairing everyone up for sparring.  I hope you’ll stay conscious with us this time Miss Mikenriku?” I flushed. He began reading off today’s partners. Ross was paired with Pasht, and I…called last… was paired with my history partner. “Alright people, BEGIN!”  No sooner than it had left Vex’s lips, he had begun. I tried desperately to keep up, but could only dodge, and even then barely.  I don’t know how long it took, but I do know that I wasn’t too tired.  In our match we had moved all the way to the river that runs all through the forest around the school, and I teetered at its edge.  He threw another potential blow, and it was enough to make me fall in. I cannot swim.  My first instinct, of course, was a gasp of disbelief.  The water burned in my lungs and I began to sink.  He must have realized I wasn’t faking, because then he pulled me out of the river.  On land, I coughed and gasped for air, trying to regain my energy.  He did not make any motion to help.  He only stood there watching me, as if he expected me to get up and start fighting again.
“Be more careful next time.”  Be more careful! BE MORE CAREFUL!!! If he hadn’t all but pushed me in I would have been fine. Reluctantly, I tried to get up, but another fit of coughing forced me back down again. Half an hour later I could breathe somewhat close to normally again.
“Can you get up and spar me yet?” I knew he’d end up asking me something along those lines.
“I guess, but not as well as before.”  He nodded.
“I’ll go easier on you.”  He was going easy on me to begin with.  I’d hate to think what to think what his going hard on someone would be like.  This was probably child’s play for him, while I struggled immensely. It wasn’t long until we went to dinner.
I still looked pale as ever, and Missus Maureen noticed.
“Aww… you okay honey?  Did Vex push you too hard?”
“No… I fell in a river.” I replied quietly, and shyly.  I was ashamed of my inability to swim.
“Don’t worry. A little dinner will get you right as rain again.”  She was right.  Afterwards, I headed to my new favorite class, Astronomy. As I headed to the field, he was heading back to the school building. I sat on my blanket, far from the others, and oddly enough, I was waiting for him to come back.  He didn’t. I ended up falling asleep. I vaguely remember Ross waking me up to go back to our dorm room and crashing there.
